The Fight Scene Rate System

I've complied a list of films with fight scenes. I've rated the fight scenes in the films on a scale from 0-5 stars. It's entirely subjective to my opinion, and I rate based on choreography, storytelling, performance and acting.

So now you know which movies to watch to get some good ole' action. Enjoy!

Nightshooters (2018)

Donnie vs Thugs: ***1/2

Donnie vs Asian/White Thug: ***3/4

Donnie vs Asian Thug: ****1/4

Donnie vs Black Thug: ****1/4

There was true suspense in this movie and the setup for the heroes' plight and fight for survival was clever and well reasoned. The stakes felt real as they establish multiple times throughout the movie that a happy ending is not necessarily guaranteed. The villains are charismatic as well as ruthless.

There are little character moments that the actors get that I really enjoyed, which helps because the downside to this type of cat and mouse go-go action style is the characters are not very fleshed out. The sound guy's acting stands out as really good, however. They kind of set up the lead actor character as one to be redeemed but he does almost nothing through the movie.

The highlight is definitely the action and use of explosives. Jean-Paul Ly is becoming one of my favorite modern screen fighters. He looked even better here than in Jailbreak.

Really dug this. Highly recommended.

Dragon Tiger Gate (2006)

Tiger vs Gangsters & Dragon: 3.5/5

Dragon/Turbo vs Gangsters: 2.25/5

Kun vs Double Devils/Gangsters: NR

Dragon vs Double Devils/Gangsters: 3/5

Shibumi vs The Gate: 3.25/5

Shibumi vs Tiger/Turbo: 3.5/5

Shibumi vs Dragon: 4/5

How much hair product was in the budget for this movie? Anyway, this is a solid action flick. And it features the most one sided final battle (for the hero) I can remember. Donnie Yen's "Dragon" gets hit once in the course of the entire film. Unheard of for a kung fu protagonist. It's strange because Tiger and Turbo get some shine early on in the movie but become afterthoughts for the rest of it. It's all about Dragon. In fairness, Donnie Yen is the best screen fighter of the 3, but still, I expected Tiger to get more to do considering his name is in the title of the film.

The action is solid throughout but let me get to this final fight. Shibumi, who is one of the most strongly written badass martial arts villains in modern film, gets absolutely owned by Dragon. It's insane. Before this, we get to watch Shibumi do things like work over a Guinness World Record setting heavy bag, crush Master Wong to death, and just generally be awesome at everything. Then Dragon shows up, and Shibumi is completely outclassed. Normally in a martial arts film, the hero has to fight from underneath and overcome. Shibumi NEVER LANDS A HIT on Dragon. Dragon slaps him around about 50 times.

Now, let me also say, I really liked the fight. See the above score. The reason I rated it so highly is because the first minute of the fight features some of the best handwork choreography Donnie's ever done. It's so fast, sharp and fluid. Also I love how once Shibumi gets palm thrusted into a wall he looks up and says, "18 Dragon Slaying Palms?" like it's some mythical technique he'd only heard legends of.

Now normally, after that initial protagonist flurry the villain would start to take control and dominate. But nope. Dragon continues to slap Shibumi around for the rest of the fight. Shibumi gets zero offense until the end. And the ending gets a little ridiculous. Sometimes less is more. I actually would've rated this higher but the lack on drama due to Dragon's dominance takes it down a little for me. I wonder if Donnie's intention was to subvert the norm by having the hero just clean the floor with the big bad. I don't know.

Anyway, this is a solid flick, though not a must unless you're a Donnie Yen completist. Mildly Recommended.

The Shaolin Temple (1982)

Kicker Chang/Jue Yuan vs Emperor/Guards: 2.75/5

Bai vs Jue Yuan: 2/5

Bai vs Guards: 3/5

Jue Yuan vs Guards: 3/5

Jue Yuan vs Emperor: 3.5/5

Monks vs Guards: 4/5

Jue Yuan vs Monks: 3.25/5

Battle Of Shaolin Temple: 4.25/5

Monk/Bai vs Officer: 4/5

Jue Yuan vs Emperor: 3.75/5

This is a great movie. The action doesn't pick up until the second half of the film. But there are some great training montages to hold you over till then. Jet Li, though quite young here, really carries the emotional weight of the movie. His facial expressions convey such deep, sincere meaning. Oh and also, the man can fight. But this is one of his better acting performances.

The meat of this movie's action comes when all of the monks take up arms and do battle. It is glorious. Watching them fight with different weapons and styles is truly something to behold.

This movie is really all about what it means to be a monk. Which I found quite interesting. If you're into that sort of thing, you'll enjoy this too.

The movie has some gorgeous shots. Beautiful landscapes. It's the first Hong Kong film shot on mainland China. It's kind of legendary, in that way.

There are flaws with the film. It's paced a bit strangely, though that's an echo of the genre and time. Occasionally it feels almost like a series of vignettes. Some of the comedic beats don't hold up. But these are minor concerns.

I really liked this movie. Recommended.

Man of Tai Chi (2013)

Opening Fight: 2.25/5

Tiger Chen vs Chou Ping: 3.25/5

Tiger Chen vs Brawler: 3.5/5

Tiger vs Guy in Blue: 2.25/5

Tiger Fighting Montage: 3.25/5

Tiger vs Iron Body Guy: 3.75/5

Tiger vs Sanshou Fighter: 3.25/5

Tiger vs 2 Fighters: 4/5

Tiger vs Master: 4/5

Tiger vs Uri Romanov: N/R

Tiger vs Iko Uwais: 3/5

Tiger vs Keanu Reeves: 2.75/5

Tiger Chen is a talented guy. This movie functions as his vehicle. That being said, I wish I liked it more. It's an ok film, but considering they got Iko Uwais from the Raid in it and the sheer amount of fighting in it, I expected more.

Keanu Reeves chews so much scenery throughout this. He is way over the top. You can tell they wanted to make his final showdown with Tiger an epic, but they fall quite short. Keanu just can't move well enough to convince me he's the dominant villain he's presented as. Yeah he's bigger than Tiger, but that's about it. Also, if I never have to hear Keanu say, "You owe me a life" ever again I can die happy.

I wish Tiger and Iko Uwais had gotten a real chance to go at it, but the story film's narrative prevents that. Let's hope Tiger shows up in The Raid 3.

Onto the positives, there are 2 great fights and a couple very good fights in this. Tiger vs his master is especially resonant, the actor playing the Master moves better than Keanu. Plus the music that fight is set to really helps to convey the story. Tiger looks good in every fight scene he's in. He holds up his end quite well. I want him in more things.

I want to support movies like this and guys like Tiger. Somewhat recommended.

Tribal Ties (2013)

Felix vs Max: 4.5/5

Love this short. Two excellent concurrent fights. With anime elements.

Slug Streets Scrappers 4 (2014)

Peaches vs Knuckles: 2.75/5

Buster vs Slugger Squad Fabulous: 2.75/5

Bruiser vs Knuckles: 3.5/5

Peaches vs Buster: 3.25/5

Bruiser vs Revered One: 3.5/5

I liked this final installment. I wish the finale had gone a bit longer, but they did a good job of making it feel epic in a short amount of time. They also didn't have access to a lot of their cast frm earlier installments, and they made it work. Not as good as Part 3, or even Part 2 I would say, but a solid end to the series. Recommended.

Slug Street Scrappers 3 (2013)

Peaches vs Hopz: 3.25/5

Peaches vs Bruiser: 1.5/5

Jimmy Broker vs Billy Broker: 4.25/5

Ryuken vs Bones: 3.75/5

Peaches vs Punchy: 3.25/5

Jimmy & Billy vs Mr. Sexy: 4/5

Knuckles vs Slugger Squad: 2.75/5

Knuckles vs Ryuken: 3.5/5

Man, this is great. Tons of fighting, and it's varied. Jimmy vs Billy steals the show. Highly recommended.

Slug Street Scrappers 2 (2012)

Ryuken vs Slugger Squad: 3.25/5

Knuckles vs Billy Broker: 2.75/5

Bruiser vs Venom: 3/5

Bruiser vs Ryuken: 3.75/5

Good short film. The fighting is varied and the story progresses. Shaun Charney and Micah Brock are both great. And we get to see them fight each other, here. Recommended.

Shadow Plant (2011)

Forest Fight: 5/5

Underground Fight: 3.75/5

The fight in the forest is one of the greatest fight scenes I've ever seen. And the underground fight is also good. The Young Masters fucking rule.

From Man to Man Vol. 2 (2013)

Brendon vs Vonzell: 4.75/5

One of the best fights of 2013, and one of the greatest fights I've ever seen. The fluidity and intricacy of the sequences are phenomenal. Love love love it.

The Man With Iron Fists (2012)

Opening Fight: 2/5

X Blade vs Group: 2.75/5

X Blade & Guards vs Batista: 2.25/5

The Gemini vs The Lions: 3.25/5

Girls vs Lions: 3/5

Jack Knife vs Dagger: 1.5/5

Rza vs Batista: 2.75/5

X Blade vs Silver Lion: DUD

Rza made a kung fu movie. This is that. It's mediocre. But it's really cool to see Rza pay homage to the old school style kung fu flicks. The problem is that there's nothing fresh or interesting about it. And the fights are nothing special. Russell Crowe is great. So is the main villain. The universe Rza creates is interesting. But it doesn't truly satisfy.

Skipable.

Future Boss (2013)

Eric vs Lorenz: 4.5/5

Two of my favorite screen fighters ever, indie or otherwise, finally going at it. Man I've been waiting on this for a while. And it doesn't disappoint. This fight is all around excellent. Especially once Eric learns how to fight, it leads to some fantastic exchanges. Great kicking, falls and handwork. Fast and fluid. Love it.

Warriors Two (1978)

Mr. Tsang vs Cashier Hua: 2.5/5

Cashier Hua vs Swordsmen and Big 3: 2.75/5

Mayor's Guard vs Swordsmen, Thunder & Iron Body: 2.75/5

Mr. Tsang vs Thunder & Iron Body: 3/5

Chasier Hua vs Fat Chun: 2/5

Fat Chun vs Beetle: 2.75/5

Mr. Tsang vs Assasins & Big 3: 4/5

School vs assasins and Big 3: 2.75/5

Fat Chun vs Tiger: 3.75/5

Cashier Hua vs Thunder: 4.25/5

Phoenix vs 2 Swordsmen: 3.25/5

Fat Chun vs 2 Swordsmen: 4/5

Cashier Hua vs Iron Body: 4/5

Fat Chun vs Master Yao: 1/5

Cashier Hua & Fat Chun vs Boss Mo: 4.5/5

One of my favorite old school flicks. Besides the fight with Dean Shek, everything here is solid. The earlier scraps set up larger scale fights towards the end. Casanova's kicking is soooo good. Lau Kar Leung carries himself very well as the Master. Fung Hak On's Mantis style looks deadly. And Sammo is in top form.

This film is considered one of the best Wing Chun movies out there, and for good reason. I love Wing Chun as a martial art and many of the techniques and a lot of the philosophy is on display here.

Highly Recommended.

"The Rival Reunion" (2014)

Fight Scene: 4/5

Andy and Daniel deliver great screen fighting here. There's a flair of anime style in this, which I love. And the fight tells a great story, and is broken up into acts, which always makes a fight feel more special.

Vlad's "Dragon Lady" (2014)

Brendon vs Pei Pei: 4.5/5

Excellent stuff. Inventive choreo and good humor as well. Pei Pei looks like a million bucks here. One of my favorite Vlad fights to date.

The Young Master (1980)

Jackie w/ Fan vs fat Dude: 3.5/5

3 Outlaws vs Officers: 3.75/5

Hwang in Shik vs Officers: 4.25/5

Sword Fight: 3.5/5

Jackie vs Yuen Biao: 3.5/5

Jackie vs Yuen Biao 2: 4/5

Jackie vs Chief: 3.25/5

Jackie vs Chief's daughter: 3/5

Jackie vs 2 Outlaws: 3.75/5

Jackie vs Hwang in Shik: 4.75/5

Man, when I think about this movie I don't usually think about it as one of my favorite fighting movies of all time. But upon review, it's probably up there. The thing with a lot of old school kung fu films is the choreo tends to be slower but more about showcasing the art. But there's some beautiful stuff here. Even the first fight with the fan, though it has no real drama to it, features beautiful fan work from Jackie. He makes the fan look like a viable weapon.

I love that Yuan Biao's in this, and that he's a total asshole to Jackie in the movie. The two clash a couple times and Yuen Biao fights with a bench, of all things. That's why old school movies can be so fun. Strange weapons are commonplace.

Hwang In Shik is a total badass every moment he's onscreen. He showcases hapkido brilliantly in this. The end fight between him and Jackie is glorious. It's a short film unto itself. 15 minutes of action, with Jackie taking heavy damage for 12 of those minutes. Young Jackie sure was durable. A tour de force of a finale.

Highly recommended.

Death Grip (2012)

Baseball Field Fight: 3.25/5

Bathroom Fight: 2.25/5

Dark Fight: 2.75/5

Eric vs Knights: 3.75/5

Eric vs Alvin: 4.75/5

Eric vs Johnny: 4.25/5

The stunt people truly are a top tier stunt group. Eric Jacobus performs great screen fighting as usual. Add Johnny Yong Bosch to the mix and we've got a barn-burner. I will say that a lot of the fighting in the first half of the film didn't grab me. The dark fight is an interesting concept. The bathroom brawl is pretty funny. Once we get towards the end, things really pick up. Alvin and Eric deliver a near perfect knife fight. And the highly anticipated finale is also great stuff, more of a storytelling fight than a technical one. Recommended.

SPL Sha Po Lang a.k.a. Killzone (2005)

Sammo vs Cops & Donnie: 3/5

Donnie vs Cops: 2.5/5

Donnie vs Wu Jing: 5/5

Donnie vs Sammo: 3.75/5

Donnie vs Wu Jing is the best modern day weapons fight I've ever seen. Donnie with his YRG baton against Wu Jing's knife. Incredible stuff. The end fight with Donnie and Sammo suffers from overused wire work. But the grappling and straight kickboxing is still great. Sammo plays a surprisingly good villain. Those are the 2 major fights. Recommended, for the weapons fight alone.

Rosa (1986)

Office Fight: 3.25/5

Yuen Biao and Girls vs Thugs: 4/5

Girl vs Chung Fa: 2.25/5

Yuen Biao vs Dick Wei: 4.25/5

Yuen Biao steals the show yet again. His group fight near the end is performed beautifully. And his showdown with Dick Wei is great. These two have terrific chemistry. Chung Fa is underutilized, which happens far too often. Not a lot of fighting here. But some quality stuff. Somewhat recommended.

Owl vs Bombo (1984)

Sammo vs George in dark: 2.5/5

Sammo & George vs Thugs: 2.5/5

Sammo vs students: 2.25/5

Sammo & George vs Thugs: 2.5/5

Sammo vs Richard Ng: 2.75/5

Sammo vs Everybody & Dick Wei: 4.25/5

Nothing really substantial until the Finale. The finale has one of my favorite "One w/ weapon vs many" group fights of all time. It's exceptional. And then capped off by a Sammo vs Dick Wei showdown. I only wish that it were longer. Nothing else really noteworthy, though. Somewhat recommended.
