The Fight Scene Rate System
I've complied a list of films with fight scenes. I've rated the fight scenes in the films on a scale from 0-5 stars. It's entirely subjective to my opinion, and I rate based on choreography, storytelling, performance and acting.
So now you know which movies to watch to get some good ole' action. Enjoy!

Vengeance Of An Assassin (2014)
Soccer game: 3.25/5
Warehouse Fight: 3.25/5
Dr. Si Foo vs Assassins: 3.75/5
Garage/Train fight: 3.5/5
Than vs Assassins: 3.75/5
Than vs Pod: 2.75/5
Man, this was disappointing. Well, since this was Panna Rittikrai's last film (as a director) let's start with the positives. The best action scene in the movie isn't rated here by me because it's a shootout. Dan Chupong shoots his way through bad guys through a 4 minute long take with machine guns, grenades and explosions galore. You might be wondering, does Dan Chupong dual wield machine guns through the whole scene? The answer is yes.
The choreography in the hand to hand action is on point. Panna was a true master at that. Very dynamic stuff, and Nantawooti Boonrapsap outperforms Chupong in that regard.
The best fight in the whole movie is when the old Chinese Doctor beats up a bunch of henchmen. The henchmen walk into a dark room. The lights turn on, and the old man appears in the middle of them all, and proceeds to punch, kick and palm strike them all to unconsciousness. Save for one guy who runs away. Then the lights go out again, and the old man disappears. Like a kung fu Undertaker. That was awesome.
Ok, now to the bad stuff. This movie is very fragmented. It doesn't make a lot of sense. A lot of character motivations are nonexistent and each character lacks depth. They're mostly a bunch of archetypes thrown together. The stoic hero, the damsel in distress, the arrogant villain, the valiant young hero, the badass femme fatale, the wise old Chinese kung fu doctor (seriously he is awesome, though). And all of this would be fine if we had any reason to care about these characters. None is given.
Also, the CGI. Oh my God the CGI. I know it's commonplace to complain about CGI in action movies, but this is about as bad as it gets. The fight scene inside the train, is really well done, including Boonrapsap using a chicken bone as a weapon to slice up henchmen. Great stuff. Then they go on top of the train. And the rest of this action sequence is green screened. All of it. It distracts from some of the great choreo and stunt work being done because it's so obvious no one is on a moving train. Thai cinema got attention from practical stunt work, so I have no idea why they do this. The scene gets dumber, when the train ends up colliding with a falling helicopter. There's more details as to why this is really dumb, but just know that it is.
Did I mention, by the way, that The Chinese Doctor only speaks English the whole way through the film? He doesn't even speak Chinese, ever. He's a doctor living in Thailand who can't speak any Thai and only ever speaks English. It's ludicrous.
I'm sure there were more dumb things but I can't remember them all. This movie reminded me of Furious 7 at times, and that's NOT what I want in my Thai action cinema. I would say skippable, but since it's Panna's last film...give it a shot.

Kung Fu Killer, aka Kung Fu Jungle (2014)
Prison Fight: 3.5/5
Tam King-Yiu vs Fung Yu-Sau: 2.5/5
Wong Chit vs Fung Yu-Sau: 3/5
Hung Yip vs Fung Yu-Sau: 3.5/5
Skirmish at the docks: 2.75/5
Sinn Ying vs Fung Yu-Sau: 3/5
Hahou Mo vs Fung Yu-Sau: 4/5
This movie is a mixed bag. As a movie it's mediocre. But the fights are pretty good. Wang Baoqiang, who plays the villain, is excellent in this. Which is a good thing since he does 90% of the fighting in this movie. I do wish they gave a more compelling backstory for him. He has a bit of clubfoot going on, which makes his impressive fighting skills even more impressive.
As a modern martial arts film, it's fairly paint by numbers as far as storytelling goes. The thing that stands out is the choreography and editing during the fight sequences. It's eye grabbing stuff. At times the moves performed feel a little too magical and out of place for a modern film, The real bread and butter in the fights is the speed and fluidity of the longer exchanges.
Also, I'm still waiting for a movie where Xin Yu kicks ass and isn't immediately killed, but that's a side point.
If you're a Donnie Yen fan, you'll dig this movie. As a martial arts film, I can only give it a Mild Recommendation.

Slug Streets Scrappers 4 (2014)
Peaches vs Knuckles: 2.75/5
Buster vs Slugger Squad Fabulous: 2.75/5
Bruiser vs Knuckles: 3.5/5
Peaches vs Buster: 3.25/5
Bruiser vs Revered One: 3.5/5
I liked this final installment. I wish the finale had gone a bit longer, but they did a good job of making it feel epic in a short amount of time. They also didn't have access to a lot of their cast frm earlier installments, and they made it work. Not as good as Part 3, or even Part 2 I would say, but a solid end to the series. Recommended.

Mario Warfare Part 8 (2014)
Toad vs Wario: 4/5
Toad's back! Brian Lee straight up kicks ass. The final installment of this franchise is satisfying and filled with action. Recommended.

TMNT Style: Epic Rival (Thousand Pounds, 2014)
Fight Scene: 3.75/5
Great stuff here. I'm not as big a fan of weapons fights, but the fighting was very good here. Not just the choreography, but the pacing and expression of each turtle's personality through just the fighting was terrific. Great music choice, too. Even the casting of all 4 turtles is on point. Only wish it were longer.

Special ID (Flash Point/SPL) (2014)
Fight Scene: 3.75/5
Much better than their Raid tribute, I dug this fight. My main qualm was that the choreography felt a bit repetitive towards the end. But overall lots of great stuff. Good exchanges, a nice sequence leading into a triangle choke, and some flashy kicks. Better than any of the solo fights in Special ID.
The Raid 2: Berandal Tribute (by EMC Monkeys, 2014)
Fight Scene: 3/5
Good effort by EMC, but I've seen them do much better. Of course it's difficult to try to pull off an homage to another style. But I was expecting a bit more. Not a bad fight by any means, just nothing special.

Mario Warfare Part 7 (2014)
Peach vs Wario: 3.25/5
Mario vs Waluigi: 4/5
Getting Eric Jacobus to play Waluigi was a terrific idea. It produces the best fight of the series so far and maybe my favorite video game character live action fight ever. Waluigi looks like an absolute beast the whole fight. Utilizing Wing Chun punches and stellar kicks, Waluigi makes Mario look outclassed for the first time in the series.
I also want to note that the fight between Peach and Wario is surprisingly good. If it weren't for Eric's performance in this episode I'd still have a new favorite fight of the series in Peach vs Wario. A lot of emotion, drama and some of the exchanges caught me off guard with how good they were. In terms of storytelling it might be the best of the series so far.
So in all, yeah this is my favorite episode of the series to date. Two major fights that deliver exactly as they should, or even better. And looking forward to the next.

The Raid 2: Berandal (2014)
Prison Bathroom Fight: 4/5
Prison Yard Fight: 3.75/5
Prakoso vs Thugs: 2.75/5
Prakoso vs Thugs in Nightclub: 3.75/5
Hammer Girl Train Fight: 3.75/5
Baseball Bat Man Fight: 4/5
Rama vs Cops: 2.25/5
Rama vs The Assassin: 3.25/5
Car Fight: 3.75/5
Rama vs Thugs in Warehouse: 4/5
Rama vs Hammer Girl & Baseball Bat Man: 4.5/5
Rama vs The Assassin: 4.5/5
If you liked the first Raid, you'e gonna love this too.
As far as comparing the 2, I will say the first Raid was much more straight forward. And also what I liked about the first Raid was that many of the nameless thugs wouldn't just be cannon fodder. They would fight back and be tough opponents. That isn't quite the case here. But instead, what we get is a wider array of credible, interesting villains. Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Guy are terrific. And the main assassin is highly skilled at Silat. A great match for Iko Uwais' character, Rama.
Also, the fights take place in many different locations, as opposed to the first film. There's also a lot more weapon work in this film. More variety, in every aspect. That's what we get with a larger budget.
I loved this. It's brutally violent. The choreography is on point. There's a lot more use of space in this. The opening bathroom fight shows Rama using the small location to his advantage. There's a very impressive fight inside a car during a chase sequence. They somehow make a fight scene happening inside of a car between 3 guys in a back seat dynamic. Impressive stuff.
Iko has even improved as a screen fighter, I would say. And he was good before. But now, he carries himself like a true star. He has the screen presence of Tony Jaa. And he's fast. His hand speed reminds me of a young Donnie Yen at times.
The villains are built up well to look like real threats to Rama. And the earlier brawls lead up to the great fights towards the end. Some brutal, creative exchanges throughout the film.
The sequel lives up to the considerable hype. Highly recommended.

Pandora's Box (2014)
Irvin vs Mikey: 3/5
Good fight. Irvin's screen fighting has improved tremendously. His kicking and tricking is very smooth. And I like the MMA style stuff here. I only wish they had left in sound effects for Mikey's ground and pound. Overall solid stuff.
Second Life (2014)
Kitchen Fight: 3.25/5
Building Fight 1: 2.25/5
Building Fight 2: 3.75/5
Nice MMA style fighting in this short film. The kitchen fight has a cool transition from a Triangle choke into a Gogoplata. Really good fight, especially considering they did it all in that one little area.
The last fight has great handwork and fluid choreography. Feels gritty and realistic, but still looks pretty. If it had gone a little longer it would be 4 stars or more. Note that there is some sound level inconsistency throughout the short film. I had to adjust accordingly. Still, recommended.

Walter Garcia's "Just Another Day" (2014)
Bar Fight: 2.75/5
Finale: 3.5/5
Bar fight was a solid, brutal exchange. The finale takes it to the next level. Great throws in there and a solid knife exchange. Solid work from Walter Garcia.
"The Rival Reunion" (2014)
Fight Scene: 4/5
Andy and Daniel deliver great screen fighting here. There's a flair of anime style in this, which I love. And the fight tells a great story, and is broken up into acts, which always makes a fight feel more special.
