The Fight Scene Rate System

I've complied a list of films with fight scenes. I've rated the fight scenes in the films on a scale from 0-5 stars. It's entirely subjective to my opinion, and I rate based on choreography, storytelling, performance and acting.

So now you know which movies to watch to get some good ole' action. Enjoy!

The Rebel a.k.a. Dong Mau Anh Hung (2007)

Opening Fight: 2.5/5

Vo's Jailbreak: 3/5

Villa Fight: 3/5

Johnny vs Tessier: 3.25/5

Johnny vs Nguyen: 3.25/5

Johnny/Vo vs Thugs: 3.75/5

Johnny vs Sy: 4.25/5

I dug this flick. It's simple and hits all the right beats. You have a good cast of villains and the final fight is going to turn heads for people who didn't know how good Johnny Nguyen is. He's real good. This movie is a showcase for him, as he's like Vietnam's Tony Jaa. Recommended.

Rope A Dope 2 - Return of the Martial Arts Mafia (2015)

Eric vs Mafia: 4/5

Eric vs Dennis: 4.75/5

Honestly, I thought the first Rope a Dope was my favorite short action film of all time. This might've surpassed it. Exceeding my already lofty expectations, Rope a Dope 2 takes a great concept and escalates it even more. Also, it's hilarious. The broken bottle gag near the end I've rewatched almost as much as the fights. And the fights are, of course, superb. Eric and Dennis are like this generation's Yuen Biao and Dick Wei, such awesome chemistry between the two. Their duel in this short is actually different than their previous ones. I could watch them fight forever (though I'm hoping if there's a third installment their characters will team up). I'm out of superlatives. Just watch this. HIGHLY Recommended

Mister a.k.a. Xian Sheng (2015)

Lorenz vs Felix: 4/5

They're back! Sweet. The first Young Masters project to be released since I had the pleasure of meeting Lorenz on my birthday two Decembers back. A tribute to "The Man From Nowhere", which is awesome in its own right, the brothers bring an even greater martial ability to their tribute to that film. Recommended.

Gorgeous (1999)

Boat Fight: 3/5

Baseball Bat Fight: 3.75/5

Bradley James Allan vs Jackie: 4.25/5

Bradley James Allan vs Jackie: 4.75/5

Not a lot of fighting, as this movie has a very different tone than most Jackie films. It's a romantic comedy, with a few fights. But man, they're good. Even the boat fight is tons of fun while it lasts. This movie is a showcase for Bradley James Allan, who was the head of Jackie's stunt team at the time. He's ridiculously fast, a highly talented screen fighter. His two fights with Jackie are worth watching alone, or seeking out individually. The movie itself is just mediocre. Somewhat Recommended.

The Drunken Master (1978)

Thunder Leg vs Charlie Wei: 3.25/5

Fei Hung vs Teacher: 1.5/5

Fei Hung vs Mom: 2.75/5

Fei Hung vs Jerry: 3/5

Fei Hung vs Chao: 3.5/5

Fei Hung vs Gorilla & Restarant Workers: 2.75/5

Beggar vs Gorilla & Restaruant Workers: 2.5/5

Su Hua-Chi vs Fei Hung: 2.25/5

Fei Hung vs Thunder Leg: 3.5/5

Iron Head vs Fei Hung: 2.25/5

Su-Hua Chi vs Pole Fighter: 2.5/5

Fei Hung vs Pole Fighter: 4/5

Chi Ying vs Thunder Leg: 3/5

Fei Hung vs Thunder Leg: 4.5/5

Classic flick. Two fights worth the movie alone, Including a classic Finale. The fighting through the whole movie is good, and really builds to the bigger fights at the end. Highly recommended old school action.

Tribal Ties (2013)

Felix vs Max: 4.5/5

Eskindir vs Lorenz: 4.5/5

Love this short. Two excellent concurrent fights. With anime elements.
